Education key to mobile security
Recent reports show that mobile subscribers worldwide are putting off plans to upgrade or buy new handsets in the face of the economic downturn (according to a new consumer poll conducted by mobile applications portal GetJar).
GetJar reports that 78 percent of subscribers are delaying plans to acquire new phones and 76 percent are preparing to reduce the amount they spend on phone usage. Some consumers have already begun cutting costs, as well. With this news of decreased mobile spending, it’s interesting to see what carriers are now doing to ease the burden.
Airwide believes that with this news, now is the perfect time for consumers to ask their carriers some important questions about the security mechanisms they have in place. What consumers will discover is that many carriers have several layers of security to protect them- they just need to be aware of how to take advantage. Asking these important questions is the first place to start:
- What kind of spam filtering option(s) does my carrier offer?
- How much do I need to worry about viruses and other types of spyware coming onto my phone through multimedia messages?
- What if my cell phone – or Smartphone – is compromised (stolen, lost, etc.) – what can be done to ensure all data is secure but wiped from the phone?
- Are there controls or limits on when and how messaging can be used (i.e. while driving)?
- How can I protect myself against scams that ask for personal information?
- Are there any user-control settings that I’m not aware of that I should be- in other words can I control what messages I receive on my phone, and I just don’t know it?
